Why Sleep Matters After Wisdom Tooth Extractions
Our bodies need sleep to heal. But why? Well, our bodies are less active while we sleep. This reduction in activity allows our bodies to focus on repairing and regenerating cells, making rest a key component of the healing process.
After wisdom tooth extractions, proper rest can reduce swelling, ease pain, and speed up recovery. But pain, discomfort, and anxiety can interrupt your sleep. That’s why a good nighttime routine is essential.
Prop Up Your Head with Pillows
Always sleep with your head elevated for at least 48 hours after wisdom tooth extractions. This helps reduce bleeding and swelling. Use a few pillows to keep your head upright. And avoid lying flat because it can increase pain and pressure.
Avoid Sleeping on Your Side
Our Vegas dentists recommend sleeping on your back. If you sleep on the side where you had wisdom tooth extractions, it can irritate the area and slow healing. Resting on your back protects your healing gums and reduces the chance of bleeding.
Stick to Soft Foods Before Bed
It’s a good idea to avoid hot or crunchy foods after wisdom tooth removal, especially around bedtime. Good bedtime snacks include:
- Applesauce
- Yogurt
- Protein shakes
- Hard-boiled eggs
- Cheese
These snacks keep your stomach full without irritating your healing mouth after wisdom tooth extractions.
Take Pain Medication on Time
Don’t skip your pain meds. Take them as directed, especially before bedtime. This helps you sleep through the night without waking up in pain. Ask our family dentistry team which medications are best for you.
Use Ice Packs Before Bed
Applying an icy compress to your face for 15 to 20 minutes before bed can reduce swelling and numb pain. Do this during the first 48 hours after wisdom tooth extractions to stay comfortable at night.
Keep Your Mouth Clean – Gently
A clean mouth helps prevent infection. So, gently rinse with warm salt water (after 24 hours) and follow your dentist’s instructions. Don’t use mouthwash or brush too hard. This helps your wisdom tooth extraction sites stay healthy and pain-free.
Limit Screens and Wind Down Early
Avoid phones, tablets, and TV at least 30 minutes before bed. Instead, read a book, listen to calming music, or try deep breathing. Relaxing before sleep helps your body recover from wisdom tooth extractions.
Avoid Smoking or Using Straws
Blood clots protect your empty socket and encourage healing, but suction can dislodge them. This leads to a painful condition called dry socket. So, don’t smoke or use straws for at least seven days after wisdom tooth extractions. It’s not worth the risk!
