Need a Dental Crown? Two Visits, One Strong Smile

by | Aug 13, 2025 | Restorative Dentistry

Why would you need a crown, and what can you expect? A dental crown is larger and stronger than a dental filling. A filling corrects the hole left by a cavity, while a crown covers the exterior surface of a tooth above the gumline, on all sides. It’s like a thick protective coating, specifically designed to fit your bite, while also allowing you to retain an all-white smile if you so choose. We offer various types of crowns, and the dentist will help you determine the best material for your restoration during your appointment.

If you’re searching for a compassionate female dentist who places great value on patient relationships and satisfaction, call Miracle Dental today at (702) 456-0056.

Why a crown?

If Dr. Tran or Dr. Pham suggests a dental crown, you probably have one of these issues:

  • Cracked or fractured tooth
  • Large, failed filling
  • Severe tooth decay
  • Enamel wear affecting comfort or bite
  • Badly stained or misshapen teeth
  • You just completed root canal therapy
  • Your dental implant post is ready for restoration
  • You’re receiving a dental bridge that features crowns

Because a crown provides a shield of protection on all sides, it restores shape, bite, appearance, health, and comfort. A crown could save you from needing root canal therapy or extraction.

The First Visit for a Dental Crown

Our priority at every visit is patient comfort. We’ll administer local anesthetic to numb the tooth and surrounding areas. After you’re sufficiently numb, the dentist will reshape the damaged tooth, then make an impression for our dental lab. The impression will show not only the tooth to be crowned, but the opposing teeth. This helps the lab technician design a crown that will fit snugly in place, and harmoniously within your bite.

If you’ve chosen a porcelain or porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM) crown for an all-white restoration, the dentist will evaluate the coloring of neighboring teeth and note the shade for the lab. Your crown will be tinted to blend seamlessly with surrounding and opposing teeth.

Before you go, the dentist will secure a temporary crown.

Behind the Scenes, at the Lab

Using your dental impressions, shade data, and notes from the dentist, a lab technician will fabricate your new crown. You can choose from white materials – porcelain, PFM, or zirconia – or you may prefer gold or a metal alloy for your crown. Creating your custom crown usually takes a week or two. When it arrives in our office, you’ll return for the final appointment.

The Second and Last Visit for a Dental Crown

Once you’re comfortable, the dentist will remove your temporary crown, then adjust the permanent crown for proper fit and cement it in place. We’ll check your bite before you leave, to ensure comfort. The crown may be a bit sensitive for a few days, and in some cases, time is required to adjust to chewing/biting with the new restoration. Within a week, your crown should feel natural.

To care for your new restoration, simply brush and floss daily, as instructed by the dentist and hygienist. Visit Miracle Dental every six months for a checkup and cleaning or, if you experience a toothache or oral abnormality, schedule an appointment anytime. With good oral health and daily smile maintenance, your new crown could last as long as:

  • Porcelain/ceramic 10-15 years
  • PFM 10-20+ years
  • Zirconia 15-20 years
  • Precious metal/alloy 20-40 years
