Types of Dental Bridges
- Traditional Bridges replace one to three teeth. The replacement teeth are bonded together in a bridge-like formation, with a crown at either end. Dr. Tran or Dr. Pham will secure your bridge by installing the crowns on healthy teeth on either side of the space to be filled with replacement teeth. Traditional bridges are reliable and durable.
- Cantilever Bridges replace a single tooth by attaching to just one healthy tooth by way of a crown. The crowned tooth supports the replacement tooth. These are often selected for replacing front teeth.
- Marilyn Bridges feature one replacement tooth with “wings” on the backside. The wings are bonded to the back of healthy neighboring teeth for support. This conservative, minimally invasive option is not as resilient as other types of bridges, but sometimes a Marilyn bridge works well on front teeth. (Not suited for patients who grind their teeth.)
- Implant-Supported Bridges are ideal for replacing three or more missing teeth in a row or when healthy teeth are not available to support a bridge. First, dental implants are surgically placed into the jawbone. Expect three to six months for the jawbone to fuse with the implants and create a solid, reliable base as replacement tooth roots. You may wear a temporary bridge during this phase. Next, the heads of the implants are revealed and abutments are secured. Next, the bridge can be permanently affixed to the implant posts by way of crowns on either side of the bridge. Implants can last a lifetime in patients with good oral health and who regularly practice home hygiene habits. The bridge may need replacement in 10-20 years.
Which type of bridge is right for you?
A thorough oral examination will help the dentist determine whether a bridge is the best option to replace your lost teeth. The number and location of lost teeth, health of neighboring teeth, your budget, cosmetic desires, jawbone density, and bite alignment will factor into determining the best type of dental bridge for your case. Dr. Pham or Dr. Tran will talk with you about the options and her recommendations. She’ll answer all of your questions so that you can make a wise, informed decision that suits your lifestyle and goals.
