You probably think of dentistry as primarily cleanings, checkups, fillings, and crowns. While these aspects of dentistry are important, Miracle Dental, a respected Las Vegas dental office, has so much more to offer you and your family!

In today’s blog, you’ll learn how we treat headaches and jaw pain caused by TMJ disorder, help patients stop snoring with oral appliances, help patients overcome dental anxiety with sedation, and how we use Botox for headache relief. If you’re looking for a Las Vegas dental office with a wide range of treatments and services, schedule a consultation at Miracle Dental today. Call (702) 456-0056.

What is TMJ treatment?

Your TMJs, or temporomandibular joints, hold your lower jaw (mandible) to your skull (specifically the maxilla). These joints allow motion up, down, and side-to-side. When muscles and other tissues around the TMJs become inflamed due to stress, we call the condition TMJ disorder or TMJ dysfunction. It leads to tooth wear and damage, as well as headaches and jaw pain.

Miracle Dental offers oral appliance therapy by way of a custom mouthguard to be worn overnight. The appliance holds the jaw in its proper resting position so that muscles can relax overnight. In some cases, wearing the oral appliance retrains the muscles, and TMJ disorder resolves. In other cases, we may suggest crowning worn-down molars to restore proper occlusion, and thus correct TMJ disorders. Patients also have the option of Botox injections to relax the jaw muscles and relieve associated pain.

How can a dentist help me stop snoring?

Snoring is obnoxious and irritating, and over time loud snoring can interrupt sleep for both the affected person and his/her partner. We know that sleep disorders lead to poorer quality of life, and we want our patients to always live their best, healthiest, happiest life.

Also, snoring is connected to sleep apnea in some patients. Obstructive sleep apnea, the most common type, occurs when soft tissues block airflow in the back of the throat. Our sleep appliances hold the lower jaw slightly, and comfortably, forward to alleviate tissue blockage and open the airway overnight.

Sleep or snoring appliances can dramatically reduce snoring and alleviate obstructive sleep apnea, in many cases. If you or your partner snore, ask about snore guards.

What about dental fear and anxiety? Can you help with those?

Estimates reveal that a third of the population experience some dental anxiety, and 12% have extreme dental phobia, also known as dental fear. Between 10 and 20% of Americans avoid professional dental care due to fear.

Whether a previous dental experience traumatized you or you hate having someone’s hands in your mouth–whatever causes you to feel afraid of professional dental care, we have a solution. Using sedation dentistry, we leverage medication to help patients feel less dental anxiety.

Please, if you’ve avoided dental care, talk with us about sedation dentistry. And know that we will never judge a patient’s state of oral health. On the contrary, we applaud people who decide to prioritize oral health and overcome their dental phobia to receive the dental care they need.
